Trump Big Beautiful Bill

On Thursday, July 3rd,2025, US President Donald Trump’s controversial bill passed in the United States House of Representatives even after being opposed by all 6 Indian American lawmakers.  The 6 members who opposed Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill are RO Khanna, Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Suhas Subramanyam, and Shri Thanedar. The representative is conversationally known as Samosa Caucus.

As per America’s Congressional Budget Office, the bill will raise the deficit by $4.5 trillion over the next 10 years. The opposition party and representatives also said that the bill cut assistance for the poorest Americans. The bill reduces funding for the medical and SNAP food assistance programmes.

The Good Part of Bill

  • Wealthy Americans: The wealthy people gain the ability to pass their wealth to their heir and dodge a tax increase. As per the estimates by Penn Wharton Budget Model reported by CNN, even after taxes and transfers, the income of the top 20% rich people increases by approximately. $13,000 per year. For the top 0.1% of earners, the average annual income gain would amount to more than $2,90,000.
  • Business Community: The bill is in favourable terms for the manufacturers and private equity firms. Manufacturers receive production upgrade tax breaks and fossil fuel companies get new drilling rights and incentives. Small businesses keep their 20% income deduction permanently.
  • Profit for Selected Industries: Defence and Space programs receive benefits of $150 billion and $10 billion, respectively. The bill benefits telecommunication companies from massive radio spectrum auctions for wireless broadband expansion.

The congressman Shri Thanedar, who represents Michigan’s 13th District, said,

“My district has the fourth highest SNAP participation rate in the country at 29%, and 47% of our district relies on Medicaid to get the healthcare they need to survive. My decision to vote No on this bill was the easiest I’ve had as an elected official, as these cuts will deeply harm every single person in my congressional district.”

The Bad Part of Bill

  • Environment: The incentives for those who buy an electric vehicle have completely vanished. The solar and Wind tax credits face rapid elimination. The beneficial program for the environment, like Home Energy Efficiency programs, will end. The bill supports, coal, oil, and natural gas industries that impact the environment.
  • Technology and Education: Tech companies lost a bid to prevent US states from regulating artificial intelligence. US elite universities face endowment taxes upto 8%.

On the impact on the environment from this bill, Doug Jones, a tax attorney and partner at Husch Blackwell, told AFP that,

“Wind and Solar took the biggest hit. The pipeline of projects that had begun construction by the prescribed time is eventually going to dry up – I don’t know how they’re going to start financing these projects without the tax credits.”

By Doug Jones, Tax Attorney and Partner at Husch Blackwell

“I’m proud of the work Democrats have done in recent years to expand coverage – helping millions of Americans gain access to care, lower out-of-pocket costs, and move us closer to universal coverage. But this bill reverses that progress, stripping health care from nearly 17 million Americans – including more than 2 million Californians – and putting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities at risk.”

By Ami Bera, Representative from California (Doctor by training)

The Ugly Part of Bill

  • Low-income Americans: As per this bill, the rich become richer, and the poor become poorer. The low-income or poor people of America face the heaviest burden through the new Medicaid work requirement and the implementation of strict food assistance. With the enactment, the bottom 20% of earners lose an average of $560 annually.
  • Immigrants: A 1% tax imposed on immigrants for sending money abroad to their families. The imposition of money transfer hit immigrant remittances. As per the new law, asylum seekers lose access to health coverage tax credits.

“This One Big ugly Bill is a betrayal of the promises this administration made to the American people. At a time when families and small businesses are facing high costs and difficulty accessing care, this bill will raise prices, strip health care and food from millions, and bankrupt our country by adding trillions to the national debt.”

By Suhas Subramanyam, Representative from Virginia’s 10th Congressional District and entered the House of Representatives in 2025

Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill was cleared on July 3, 2025, and was signed into law by US President Donald Trump on July 4, 2025. The bill only benefits rich people, industrialists, whereas it impacts poor people, immigrants, and the environment.
